The Tall Man in the Grey Flannel Suit

BarneysBarney's is now advertising their "Made to Measure" service at several locations, featuring brands like Zegna, Incotex, Isaia, Brioni, and others (depending on your city). I noticed that their logo features the silhouette of Gregory Peck from The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit (1956). Whether this is really egregious content infringment or not, I can't say, given that the original movie is over 50 years old. Maybe it's public domain by now..

Suffice it to say, the image of Gregory Peck (height 6'3" – 6'4", depending on which source you trust) has become ubiquitous and universal enough to communicate hum-drum corporate conformity. Maybe that's the irony that Barney's was trying to point out, that even he - the Corporate Everyman - would have had to have suits "Made to Measure"... but I kind of doubt it.

For those really ready to get out of the corporate mold, the AAA (in the form of the AAAFFF) is offering creatives the opportunity to get out of the suit for good. Apply for a grant to free your mind from the bonds of advertising, and may your tall-sized legs follow.

Saved from a soggy fate

Purrin_3

I found out that my newest favorite-est clothing company is having a huge sale right now. NAU!!

Until February 4th, you can get screaming deals on some of their coolest stuff - up to 50% off. I scored this perfect Shroud of Purrin Trench raincoat. Thank God, because the way it's been raining here in the Bay Area for the last week, I've gotten drenched wearing inadequate gear several times.

My favorite thing about this coat is all the pockets. 2 outside waist zip pockets, 1 outer left breast zip pocket, 1 inner right breast zip pocket, and 1 right inside waist pocket. Not that I'd carry something in all of them, but it's nice to have options of where to stuff accessories (scarf, gloves, hat, etc.).

Jack_at_2

The only downside to this post is that I also ordered the Jack A-T Pant, and was so excited to wear them (I have 3 NAU jackets, 2 shirts, and only 1 pair of pants so far), but they turned out to be too short! How can this be? NAU, your tops for men are so perfectly sized in length for tall folks, how can the pants be so different? So, I'll have to return for exchange, that is if there are comparable pants that might be longer.

Note to NAU: Time to size for a 35"-36" inseam on your pants instead of 33". Otherwise, I still love you.

A Walking Nightmare

MjgreywThe picture to the left, unapologetically cribbed from the stunner of a blog that is The Sartorialist illustrates a perverse and potentially crippling trend in men's fashion: The Short Suit.

Now, at least for our male readers, I'm sure you must be able to identify with the poor soul who, whether fitted incorrectly for his first suit, wearing a hand-me-down from a father/uncle/brother that is unable to be altered, or who experiences a youthful growth spurt, has to wear a suit that is too short. We've all been there. Why one would be tempted to do it voluntarily, however, is a mystery.

Thom Browne, the purveyor of this trend (one of his daring suit-wearers is profiled in Esquire this month) has noted that people tend to have violent and negative reactions to adherents of his style. The equivalent for women might be seeing another woman willfully sporting whale-tail, or wearing a baby-doll dress that readily exposes panties or the lack thereof. I suppose the answer to that is, like all reactionary fashion statements, this one is transgressive, but in a way that is subtler than most.

It's puzzling to me, as a tall guy, why normal or short fellas would go to the trouble to get a suit trimmed, cropped, slimmed and shortened to such a degree that they can't exhale with the button closed, or stoop to re-tie their shoes. Maybe Browne recommends slip-ons.

To those in the "fashion know", this trend says to your fellow Men's Vogue readers that yes, you are willing to spend upwards of $4000 on a horribly tailored suit with the express purpose of making the yawn-inducing statement that even as a high roller, you enjoy fucking with conformity. That you are not wearing the suit, but the suit is wearing you.

What it says to everyone else is one of the following:

A) I don't know how to dress myself.
B) I got caught in the rain last night, and threw my suit in the dryer.
C) I picked this up at Goodwill. Pretty good fit for Dead Man's Clothes, doncha think?
D) I borrowed this from my 13yr old nephew.
E) I am a hipster dufus.

My great fear of course, is that more suitmakers will be caught up in this hype, and stop making off-the-rack suits in longer cuts. Or that the longer cuts will just wind up being regular, and regular will be short. Like low-rise men's jeans, this horror should be relegated to the trend scrap heap and fast.

Is "rugged lamb" an oxymoron?

_5442362Also noticed this fine piece on Nordy's the same time as I was browsing the Theory selection. This Marc Jacobs leather has classic Brooks-esque looks, and understated styling. In fact, it looks like it might actually weather well and at the same time stand up the the job of protecting you while riding. Which you definitely can't say for most couture 'motorcycle' jackets. It's available in L-XXL Tall.

Stringbean Theory

_5452698 I snagged this gem from Magnificent Bastard. Theory has introduced 15.5 - 17.5 Long classic dress shirts in their assortment from Nordy's. Maybe Barney's and others will start carrying them as well, but as far as I've known, Nordstrom has always had a great selection for Magnificently Tall Bastards. Note: picture deliberately cropped because the model had serious toolbag potential.

More of a Mack in Mac Mor?

_5129328Like it or not, the rainy season will be upon us sooner than you think, and this Mac Mor raincoat from Nordstrom looks pretty good. I've been shopping for a carcoat length overcoat for over a year now, and this one may prove to be it. It's available in Navy in Large Long and XLarge Long.
Now, if only the "Willow" were also available in the same size, I might grab it. Looks like that one's only left in one size, and on closeout.

More Tall Banana

Br51245800vliv01Looks like Banana Republic has some tall men's shirts on sale, including this striped, barrel-cuff shirt. It's shown with a kind of oddly retro tie combo, but by itself, it has a nice Paul Smith-esque look to the pattern.

NAU is the now

Acoustic

Riding2
NAU is a new kind of outdoor sportswear company. They're focused around three principles in their creative philosophy - Beauty, Performance, and Sustainability. They have invented a new methodology around product design that is progressive, environmentally sustainable, and puts a new spin on fashionable sportswear. While concentrating on all of these factors, NAU has managed to create some incredibly versatile, comfortable, and well-fitting clothing for tall people, sporting or not. Since most of their clothes allow coverage while bicycling, running, or other outdoor exercise, they are slim-fit, and have unusually long sleeves. I ordered both their "Acoustic" and "Riding" (on SALE right now!) style men's jackets, and am exceptionally happy with both.
